This year has already turned tragic on many fronts in the rock world: Megadeth’s Nick Menza, Prince, David Bowie, Eagles’s Glenn Frey and many more influential rock figures. And this past weekend was darkened by another rock musician’s death: former 3 Doors Down guitarist Matt Roberts passed away at the age of 38.

TMZ reported that Matt’s father Darrell Roberts was awoken around 9AM by the police, who told him that Matt passed away. On Saturday, August 20, the musician was found dead in a Wisconsin motel, where he stayed after the rehearsal for a benefit concert. Emergency crew were unable to revive the man.

The cause of the guitarist’s death has yet to be revealed, but according to TMZ’s sources, may have been a case of an accidental overdose of prescription pills.

Matt parted ways with 3 Doors Down in 2012 due to blood circulation problems and other health issues. He was one of the founders of 3 Doors Down back in 1994, alongside lead singer Brad Arnold and bassist Todd Herrell.

The concert Matt rehearsed for that night was a fundraiser event at the Our Place bar for the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight. The show would have been the guitarist’s first appearance since he exited 3 Doors Down. In the video below you can see Roberts’ father speaking to the crowd.

AlteRock team sends condolences to Matt’s family and fans.
