However, Sum 41 singer says being raised without his dad was “a subject that I don’t really care about”
It’s always good to hear some news from Sum 41. Even more so, when the band is treating us to their new, acoustic single with a touching message. Now that Sum 41 are continuing to tease their upcoming album, Order In Decline, they come up with one one single after another. The third new song and its music video are titled ‘Never There’ (see it below).
The song tells the family story of a child, growing up in a single-parent home, which closely reflects frontman Deryck Whibley’s own past. Whibley was raised by his mom only. He says he has never seen his dad, but it has never been a subject he tended to overthink.
“I never wanted to write this song, it just kind of poured out of me, I tried to fight it at first but there was no stopping it,” the singer comments. “I could tell I was writing about my dad, who I’ve never met and throughout my life it has always been a subject that I don’t really think about or care about.”
Whibley also mentions his mother in the song, showing her as a heroic figure. Just like the song character, the singer’s mom was a strong type of woman, always there for her child.
“It has never really bothered me and when I started thinking about why it never bothered me, I realized it was because my mum was so great and I have such a loving relationship with her,” Whibley explains. “She was so strong as a single mother for my whole life that I never needed to think about my dad.”
