Metal celloists Apocalyptica will celebrate 20th anniversary since their debut album release by rocking their own cruise

January 20, 2016

Finnish cello powerhouse Apocalyptica are nearing the 20th anniversary since the release of their debut album, Plays Metallica by Four Cellos. Launched on Sep 30, 1996, the record was a massive breakthrough for the band, which made Apocalyptica one of the loudest names on the metal scene. No wonder the band is taking the upcoming celebration very seriously. Two days ago cello maestros announced their very special cruise on board of The Baltic Princess, heading from Finnish city of Turku to Sweden’s capital Stockholm on Jun 9, where the musicians will play two shows, one in their classical metal sound and one unplugged.

The whole cruise night will be full of Apocalyptica-related games and activities including a contest with a grand prize of a meet and greet with the band members. See the full cruise program below and watch the self-made video announcement from the Scandinavian celloists right here:

While the band’s 20th anniversary cruise is a few months away, Eicca Toppinen and Perttu Kivilaakso are getting ready to premiere their own opera on the stage of the Finnish National Opera. The performance is titled ‘Indigo’ and its first night will take place in Helsinki on this Friday, Jan 22.

“We have created the most beautiful opera since ‘Turandot’,” Apocalyptica’s frontmen claim. “No one else would have the guts to write such lovely arias and such a Romantic story in the 2010s.” ‘Indigo’ has many levels and scenes to offer: from the parallel reality to the realm of subconscious of its characters, reaching their deepest subconscious level, the so-called “indigo state.”

The celloists believe that their vision of a perfect opera will find the way to the hearts of people of all ages and music tastes: “Put simply, this is the opera that we would like to see. It has no target group as such, just as Apocalyptica doesn’t. If we love it, we can’t be the only ones. That’s how we do everything we do.”

‘Indigo’ is a symphony opera with no drum kit or electric guitars. The show will be orchestrated by Jaakko Kuusisto, while Vilppu Kiljunen will be in charge of the production of the piece. Even though the opera will be conducted only on the stage of Finnish National Opera, the language of signing parts will be English. Eight performances of ‘Indigo’ are scheduled in Helsinki starting Jan 22 and finishing on Feb 18.

Once the opera nighs are over, Apocalyptica will have a couple of month to rest before the summer festival season begins. On Jun 3, the celloists will fly to light up Rock in Vienna festival in Austria followed by performances in many other major rock events this summer, including Italian Rock in Roma, Belgian Graspop Metal Meeting, Czech Masters Of Rock, Polish Woodstock Festival German renowned M’era Luna, so 2016 promises to be quite a blast for the Finnish act.

And in case you have missed the latest single from Apocalyptica and Japanese act VAMPS, titled ‘Sin In Justice’, which came out via Spinefarm Records on Nov 20, 2015, give it a listen below.
