Creeper have premiered a video for single ‘Black Mass’, inspired by creepy experiences of people who suffered sleep paralysis

January 28, 2016

Creeper have dropped a video for their track ‘Black Mass,’ the lead single off their upcoming EP The Stranger, coming out Feb 19. ‘Black Mass’ is a performance video, featuring moments where a mysterious character, “a heartbroken monster”, who the band named The Stranger, is peeping here and there. The Stranger also appears in the background of the cover artwork. The figure of The Stranger was inspired by experiences of people who suffered sleep paralysis, as they tend to see a ‘black mass’ haunting them at night.

“The concept behind the video is a dream that our EP’s cover character named Madeline is experiencing,” details frontman Will Gould (via Altpress). “She’s in the middle of an episode of sleep psychosis with the band performing to her in her dream. She awakes to find herself in her bedroom.

The song’s lyrics are written from the perspective of the character of The Stranger, the heartbroken monster who is the EP’s namesake. They’re partly inspired by recounts of sleep paralysis, where sufferers describe seeing a ‘black matter’ or ‘black mass’ haunting them in their rooms at night, while they lie paralysed in bed.”
