Long-circulating rumours that Jared Leto would take on the Joker in the filming of “Suicide Squad” have been officially confirmed
Now that the cast of the film has been officially announced, it has also been revealed that Will Smith will play Deadshot, best known as Batman, while Tom Hardy plays will take on the role of the group’s leader, Rick Flagg. Jared Leto’s character, the Joker, will not be a lonely villain in the film: The Wolf Of Wall Street star, Margot Robbie, has been chosen to play Harley Quinn, his on-and-off girlfriend.
Suicide Squad is an antihero team of incarcerated supervillains who undertake high-risk missions to be given a chance at redemption by the United States government. The interesting detail about the film is that the Joker has actually never been on the Suicide Squad in the comics, so the story isn’t known to the comics’ readers. Another curious titbit is that originally Ryan Gosling was in talks to play the Joker, but apparently refused because the contract was for multiple movies. “Suicide Squad” is one of 10 movies based on DC Comics characters that has been planned to hit the screen by 2020.
Greg Silverman of Warner Bros. Pictures has expressed his great excitement with the result. “David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote Training Day and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains… We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”
The film will start shooting in Toronto from mid-April to September and is due for release August 5, 2016.
