The complicated relationship story in ‘Gravity’ made it “the longest of all of the songs on the album to finish”
Manchester indie rockers Pale Waves have recently announced their fourth album, Smitten, scheduled for release September 27 via an independent label Dirty Hit. And you know something good is coming our way, as the record was produced by Iain Berryman, who’s already worked on Wolf Alice and Florence and the Machine releases.
Ahead of the album launch, Pale Waves keep giving us a taste of their new music. Their third single off of Smitten, titled ‘Gravity’, comes with a music video starring singer-songwriter Kelsi Luck.

The song narrative is of a personal kind. Along with sceneries of idyllic gardens and a boat floating on the lake, we follow the beautiful yet complicated romance of Baron-Gracie and her partner. Reflecting the title of the track, the lyrics revolve around a deep relationship one cannot help but be pulled towards. The chorus starts with the lines:
She's pulling me like gravity
Everywhere she goes
Am I in too deep or outta my reach?
Musically, ‘Gravity’ is a smooth, balanced mix of old-school indie rock and 2024′ pop tunes. Sort of, Avril Lavigne meets Taylor Swift on the streets of 80s’ brit-pop UK.
Like ‘Gravity’, most songs on Smitten were inspired by the vocalist’s past relationships and personal dramas. The album theme is described by the band as “the excitement and euphoria as well as the confusion and pain of early queer relationships”.
Prior to the launch of ‘Gravity’, Pale Waves released two singles from the upcoming album. The first one, ‘Perfume’, dropped on BBC Radio 1 on June 12 and peaked at number 13 on Billboard Japan’s Hot Overseas chart. The second single from Smitten, titled ‘Glasgow’, premiered exactly a month later.
