The winner and the broadcaster are still to decide whether Iceland will participate in Eurovision or not, taking into account the Israel-Hamas conflict
A small yet Eurovision-admiring country Iceland, whose movie “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” became iconic for many eurofans, has just chosen its winner and, normally, automatic representative for Eurovision. It’s Hera Björk, a 51-year-old singer, who had already sung for Iceland at Eurovision 2010. Following the final of national selection Söngvakeppnin, Hera will represent her country with the song ‘Scared of Heights’.
Despite singing about the fear of heights, Hera is hoping reach a higher result at Eurovision this May. Her previous result in Europe’s most significant song contest was the 19th place with the song ‘Je Ne Sais Quoi‘. Her winning 2024 song ‘Scared of Heights’ was written by Ferras Alqaisi, Jaro Omar, Michael Burek, and Ásdís María Viðarsdóttir.

However, it’s not confirmed yet whether Iceland will even participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö. According to the statement of the Icelandic broadcaster RÚV back in January, the winner of Söngvakeppnin 2024 will have to decide, along with RÚV, whether they want to participate in Eurovision 2024 or not. The Icelandic broadcaster had called to EBU to ban Israel from participation in the contest this May due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
