The world music beacon and one of the most innovative performers, Prince, passed away on Thursday morning. The iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, aged 57, was found dead at his Paisley Park residence in Minnesota. The tragic news broke via TMZ and was soon confirmed by the singer’s publicist. Alterock and the whole rock community sends deepest condolences to Prince’s friends and family members.

Prior to his most recent performance, Prince had cancelled two concerts due to health concerns. Early Friday on April 15, Prince’s plane made an emergency landing in Illinois after his show in ATL, and was immediately taken to the hospital from there. The initially announced reason for emergency landing, reported by TMZ, was that the musician was battling the flu. However, according to the latest TMZ updates, Prince was treated for a drug overdose: when he arrived at the hospital, doctors gave him a “save shot,” which is normally administered to counter opiate effects.

Prince was advised to stay at the hospital for 24 hours, but he did not follow the doctor’s instruction: the singer left the hospital when he found out he was not guaranteed a private room. Moreover, Price reportedly held a $10 dance party dance the following night, April 16, at his Paisley Park estate. He made a brief appearance to show everyone he was still alive and on the mend. Prince didn’t sing at the party: he only showed off his new guitar and piano and prophetically told the crowd, “Wait a few days before you waste any prayers.”

TMZ reports that Prince was found in an elevator at his Paisley Park compound: the medics attempted to perform CPR, but were unable to revive him. The emergency dispatch call stated: “male down, not breathing.” Price was pronounced dead on the scene at 10:07 AM Central Time. The Carver County Sheriff’s Office is reportedly investigating the circumstances of Prince’s death. There are no signs of foul play.

US president Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have posted the following statement, after the tragic news broke:

“Today, the world lost a creative icon. Michelle and I join millions of fans from around the world in mourning the sudden death of Prince. Few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly, or touched quite so many people with their talent. As one of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our time, Prince did it all. Funk. R&B. Rock and roll. He was a virtuoso instrumentalist, a brilliant bandleader, and an electrifying performer.
“A strong spirit transcends rules,” Prince once said — and nobody’s spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his band, and all who loved him.”

Prince became world famous in 1982 after his breakthrough album, titled 1999. A seven-time Grammy Award winner, and Academy Award winner for ‘Purple Rain,’ he was a unique performer who boldly experimented with various music styles from jazz to rock, from techno to hip-hop, and never agreed to conform to existing music industry frames or genre limitations. The music maverick, Prince sold more than 100 million records during his career. He reshaped the musical landscape of his time and had enormous impact in the making of thousands of today’s singers and bands. He was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
