Czech Television will not take part in the upcoming Eurovision edition, citing budget decrease and the contest demands

Czechia is out of Eurovision Song Contest 2027. After weeks of rumors, Česká televize confirmed it will have to skip the Burgas contest, saying “We won’t see the Czech flag on stage next year.” The broadcaster blames ongoing budget adjustments.

Czech outlet Aktuálně.cz reports massive cuts, including staff layoffs and axed shows on the news and children’s channels (ČT24 and ČT :D), as well as in lifestyle programming. Being one of the most expensive events to participate in, Eurovision, unfortunately, landed on the chopping block too, which has already drawn criticism from former ČT Director General Jan Souček. ČT won’t even broadcast the show. Czech fans will only be able to watch the competition on Eurovision’s YouTube channel, just like all non-participating countries, and vote in the “Rest of the World” category.

In the history of the biggest international music contest, Czechia has never won, but it has been a fan favourite, with its best result a 6th place for Mikolas Josef’s youthful and fun “Lie to Me” entry in 2018. ČT says it assesses each edition separately, so there is no word on a comeback.

Importantly, Czechia broadcaster’s decision is not linked to the Israel controversy, which has been dividing the contest over the past few years, resulting in multiple boycotts across Europe as each contest edition in nearing. Ireland won’t take part the second year in a row, and Spain is yet to make the decision. On the other hand, the Netherlands, which sat out 2026, is returning with broadcasting organization NOS after Avrotros chose not to participate.

Meanwhile, Canada makes its debut and Bulgaria hosts for the first time at Arena Burgas on May 11, 13 and 15, 2027. Who is your all-time favourite Czech entry? Let us know your thoughts right now on Blog’o’vision Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and AlteRock X!
