Melodi Grand Prix 2026 in Norway just gave Eurovision Song Contest 2026 a breath of fresh air

Normally full of vanilla-pop and pseudo‑folk entries, Eurovision Song Contest has just got a pop punk delight added to it. Norway’s song contest Melodi Grand Prix 2026, held over the weekend, culminated in crowning Jonas Lovv as its winner. He will now be waving the flag for his homeland at the 70th Eurovision edition this May.

Norway’s MGP saw nine acts perform their songs in hope to represent their home country in Vienna at Europe’s biggest song contest. Lovv was performing last in the running order, wrapping up the song selection with his high-energy pop punk/indie pop song “Ya Ya Ya”. Both jury and Norwegian voters had put Lovv in their first place position, making him a hands-down victor of the night. The honourable second place went to a Eurovision all-star Alexander Rybak with his empowering song “Rise”.

Some eurofans immediately thought the winning song’s title, “Ya Ya Ya”, reminded too much of the joke track “Jaja Ding Dong” featured in the iconic movie Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. In fact, musically Lovv’s entry couldn’t be further from that. “Ya Ya Ya” performance is a vocally impeccable, groovy guitar-led track, where rhythmical beat in verses is topped with an emotional “broken bone” chorus channeling his inner pain.

Watch Lovv’s winning MGP performance below:

Lovv isn’t a no-name in his home country. He is already a well‑known figure in Bergen’s music scene. Over the past decade, he has played in several bands and regularly filled venues across his hometown. He’s performed at major festivals and enjoyed airplay on multiple radio stations. Beyond music, Lovv channels strong emotion into fashion, using his unique unapologetic style to challenge gendered clothing norms. His “Ya Ya Ya” MGP performance was as much a music masterpiece as an anti-stereotype fashion statement.

After winning Melodi Grand Prix 2026, Lovv will represent Norway at the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 in the second semi-final on May 14 in Vienna, Austria. The previous year’s Eurovision artist from Norway was Kyle Alessandro with a fiery song “Lighter”, who made it though to the final and amassed quite a fandom.
