Kipiani’s song ‘Take Me as I Am’ is an anthem to accepting yourself the way you are
There is always at least one song at Eurovision Song Contest from a rock or metal act. From 2006 Finnish heavy metal monsters Lordi to last year’s industrial BDSM act Hatari, no Eurovision passes without a rock star.
This year it’s Georgia. The country decided to send Tornike Kipiani, the winner of
Georgian Idol, to Eurovision contest to represent their country with ‘Take Me as I Am’. The song was written by Tornike Kipiani himself, as well as composer Aleko Berdzenishvili.

Tornike Kipiani is a 32-year-old musician and, for a second, the father of three children. He previously won the X Factor of Georgia in 2014, where his mentor was the future Eurovision star, Tamta, who represented Cyprus last year in Israel.
The song Kipiani will be singing this May in Rotterdam, NL, is about people not accepting who you are and wanting you to dress and behave a certain way. The song opens with the lines:
How do you want me to talk like an Englishman?
Where do you want me to dress like an Italian?
Now do you want me to dance like a Spanish guy?
I guess you don’t love me
Georgia in Eurovision Song Contest
Last year’s Georgian singer Oto Nemsadze failed to qualify for the Eurovision Final, so the stakes are high for Kipiani. The singer first tried to represent Georgia at Eurovision in 2017 national final with the song ‘You Are My Sunshine’. But that year Tamara Gachechiladze won the right to represent the country. Sadly, she also failed to qualify to the Grand Final of Eurovision.
Overall, Georgia has been in the Eurovision Song Contest eleven times since their first entry in 2007. So far its biggest achievement in the contest has been 9th place in 2010 by Sofia Nizharadze and in 2011 by Eldrine. Interestingly, Georgia has already won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest three times!
For a year Georgia withdrew from the contest in 2009 after the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) rejected their politically-charged song, titled ‘We Don’t Wanna Put In’, refering to Vladimir Putin who was the Russian Prime Minister at the time.
Let’s see if the public responds to Kipiani’s “Why don’t you love me?” Watch the official music video and read the lyrics for ‘Take Me as I Am’ below. Do you like the track? What’s your favorite rock entry of Eurovision so far? Let us know in the comments on AlteRock Facebook and AlteRock Twitter!
Tornike Kipiani ‘Take Me as I Am’
How do you want me to talk like an Englishman?
Where do you want me to dress like an Italian?
Now do you want me to dance like a Spanish guy?
I guess you don’t love me
No, you don’t love me
How do you want me to dance like an Englishman?
Where do you want me to dress like an Italian?
Now do you want me to dance like a Spanish guy?
I guess you don’t love me
No, you don’t love me
I love you, ti amo, te quiero
Take me as I am
But you don’t love me
Why don’t you love me?
So tell me why do you want me to smell like a French homme?
Oh, tell me why do you want me to play like a German?
Why don’t you want me to be just the way I am?
I guess you don’t love me
Why don’t you love me?
Je t’aime, ich liebe dich
But you don’t love me
Why don’t you love me?
I love you, I love you
