The last time we heard a song from Montenegro in Eurovision Song Contest was in 2022, when Vladana Vučinić sang ‘Breathe’ in Turin, Italy. Having played it safe for years, Montenegro hadn’t made it far in the contest till now. The highest position it’s ever achieved to date was 13th place in 2015 (Adio ‘Farewell’). This year Montenegrin public wanted to shake things up and clearly favoured rock and metal entries and bands over solo vocal powerhouses.
Curiously, NeonoeN’s victory with 20 points came as a result of ranking second with both the audience and the jury. The jury vote’s favourite turned out to be Nina Žižić with her song ‘Dobrodošli’, while TV viewers gave preference to a truly heavy song by the band Baryak’s, titled ‘Dva Srca’ (‘Two Hearts’). Combined in a 50/50 proportion, the votes led to crowining NeonoeN the winner.
Written by Ilija Pejović – a composer, new to Eurovision – the song is an eclectic fusion of punk rock choruses, rap verses and an astonishingly metal bridge. The track, criticising the ruthlessness of social media, sensational content and exaggerated reactions, is performed fully in Montenegrin, while the audience will surely remember the outstanding chorus chant “clickbait”, the term that doesn’t need translation.
