The band’s first album in nearly five years, No Gods No Masters, arrives June 11

Garbage are back. Back with a powerful new single ‘The Men Who Rule The World’, mercilessly exposing sexism, racism and all kinds of discrimination in the world. The new single gives us the first taste of their upcoming album No Gods No Masters, which arrives June 11. It marks the band’s first studio record in nearly five years.

Sonically, ‘The Men Who Rule The World’ is classical Garbage: hard-hitting guitar riffs, rhythmical, almost marching drums and Shirley Manson’s unmistakeable vocals. The aggressive lyrics of the single and reference to ABBA’s catchy line “money money money” make it sound like a political manifest:

The men who rule the world
Have made a fucking mess
The history of power
The worship of success
The king is in the counting house
He’s chairman of the board
The women who crowd the courtrooms
All accused of being whores

The whole upcoming album, No Gods No Masters, shows Garbage react to what’s been going on in the world since the start of the pandemic, “astounding chaos we find ourselves in”, as they put it. The band’s timing couldn’t be better:

“This is our seventh record, the significant numerology of which affected the DNA of its content: the seven virtues, the seven sorrows and the seven deadly sins,” Manson wrote in the press release. “It was our way of trying to make sense of how fucking nuts the world is and the astounding chaos we find ourselves in. It’s the record we felt that we had to make at this time.”

For the protest-like video for ‘The Men Who Rule The World’, Garbage teamed up with Chilean film director, animator and painter Javi Mi Amor. Throughout the video, we go through different eras in history from Donald Trump’s presidency to the Black Lives Matter movement. Be sure to watch the video below:

‘The Men Who Rule The World’ Lyrics:

The men who rule the world
Have made a fucking mess
The history of power
The worship of success
The king is in the counting house
He’s chairman of the board
The women who crowd the courtrooms
All accused of being whores

Money money money
Money money money

The fleecing of the people
All the fucking time
They call it self-preservation
But we call it a crime
Tented cities on sidewalks
Underneath the clouds
Imaginary neighbours
With plastic cups and paper crowns

Stuck inside my head
Stuck inside my head
All the fucking time
Stuck inside my head
Stuck inside my head
All the fucking time

The violator, hate the violator
The violator, destroy the violator

Now let’s save all of the animals
Let’s save all the squid
Let’s load them onto the mothership
With the elders and the kids (let’s go)
Save great works of genius
The birds, the bugs, the seeds
And make it a crime to tell a lie again
And watch those haters bleed

Money money money
Money money money
Money money money
Oh, money money money

Stuck inside my head
Stuck inside my head
All the fucking time
Stuck inside my head
Stuck inside my head
All the fucking time
Stuck inside my head
Stuck inside my head
All the fucking time
Stuck inside my head
Stuck inside my head
All the fucking time

The violator, hate the violator
The violator, destroy the violator
The violator, hate the violator
The violator, destroy the violator
The violator, hate the violator
The violator, destroy the violator
The violator, hate the violator
The violator, destroy the violator
The violator, hate the violator
The violator, destroy the violator
The violator, hate the violator
The violator, destroy the violator
The violator, hate the violator
(Money, money, money)
The violator, destroy the violator
The violator, hate the violator
The violator, destroy the violator
The violator, hate the violator
(Money, money, money)
The violator, destroy the violator
The violator, hate the violator
The violator, destroy the violator
The violator, hate the violator
(Money, money, money)
The violator, destroy the violator
