Once in a blue moon you get to hear a track and then see the music video for it which fits so well with the lyrics that the message of the song becomes crystal clear to you or opens from a new, deeper angle. This is exactly how you feel watching The Front Bottoms’ soulful clip for their new song, ‘Vacation Town.’ Be sure to give it a look and listen below.
From the very first seconds of the video, your attention is fastened to the two selves of one man, tied back to back as if they were Siamese twins. These are the current and the younger selves of the character, who observes himself now, from the “adult” perspective, wishing he could be as energetic and full of hope as he used to be. The recurring lines
I miss the hours in the morning
And you in the morning hours
…are as melancholic as they are full of inner balance, even though the author seems not content with his current self and misses “the way things used to be” (including “walking naked through the backyard”, haha!).
While AltPress believes that the song is about “feeling the pressure of growing up”, I’d rather say it’s about rejecting the rut as you get older and yearning for the times when you were full of life, hope and belief in the many paths the future opens for you. The song is taken from The Front Bottoms’ upcoming album, Going Grey, due out October 13. The band’s last album, Back On Top, came out in 2015. Last month the band premiered the first single from their new record, the song titled ‘Raining’.
