The band members have been posting studio footage since September: is the band working on new album?

Recently, System of a Down have been posting a lot of studio footage, showing all band members but the vocalist, Serj Tankian, play some tunes or just noodling around. Here is some fresh footage of their rehearsals that Shavo Odadjian and John Dolmayan just posted on Instagram (see below).

The video excerpts feature Daron Malakian riffing on his guitar and Dolmayan showing his mastery on drums. The question is: what are System of a Down up to? All we know officially is that there’s a European tour scheduled for June 2017, but the fact that the band members spend so much time in the studio lately has led most fans to presume the guys are secretly working on a new album.
And if so, why is frontman, Serj Tankian, missing in those studio videos? But earlier this year, Tankian suggested that the timing may finally be right for the group to pursue new music. We know he’s been busy taking part in various projects outside System Of A Down since their last studio album came out in 2005. But at the beginning of this year Tankian unveiled in one interview that the group have a lot of new material that they play to each other:

I can’t make a statement in terms of whether we’re going to have a record or not, because we haven’t gone into the studio and done it. But there’s definitely communication going on, songs being played to each other and all that stuff, so it’s good. We’ll see what happens.”[/quote]

The band members have been posting updates in social media since September, but it is yet to be revealed what they’re up to. Serj Takian and Co. haven’t released any new music for more than a decade, so fans are rubbing their hands patiently awaiting the “big news” from the secretive band.
