“I’m really curious to see how people react,” admits Peter Tägtgren

Swedish industrial metal staples PAIN are back with a new single, “I Don’t Give A Fukk,” released via Reigning Phoenix Music. The eclectic genre-bending single is accompanied by a hilarious, self-deprecating music video, showing Peter Tägtgren’s fight with his producer, played by actor Peter Stormare.

Stormare is a versatile Swedish star famous for playing intense, eccentric villains, like ruthless killer Gaear Grimsrud in Fargo and mob boss John Abruzzi in the television series Prison Break. Tägtgren and Stormare have been friends for years – just rewatch PAIN‘s music videos for “Go With The Flow” and Lindemann‘s “Steh Auf” and “Frau & Mann” (back from the time Tägtgren was part of Lindemann).

The music video starts with a scene where Stormare’s furious character, a music label top dog, demands Peter to change his music style and start rapping. He discards the metal singer’s reluctance to switch genres and lack of experience in rap songwriting and sends him off to get down to business to make a high-grossing song, and that’s where PAIN’s fans are in for a shock. The single’s two verses are indeed pure rap, followed by a poppish boyband type of chorus, so get ready to have your jaw on the floor. But if we know anything about Mr Tägtgren at all, it’s that he won’t let us leave starved for signature raw PAIN energy. And just like that, in the best traditions of “Coming Home”, we suddenly get a wall of grinding guitars and Tägtgren’s in-your-face screamo. Q.E.D.

The music video for the track is packed with conspiracy imagery and accusations of hypocrisy and division, depicting a world so loud and confusing that nobody knows who or what to believe. The track was co-written by Peter Tägtgren and his son, PAIN drummer Sebastian Tägtgren, continuing a creative partnership that has been blossoming across the band’s recent releases. Introducing the single, the frontman comments:

“I’m really curious to see how people react, and I’m stoked about the new single. As most of you know, I always try not to repeat myself, and this time I’m sure people will be wondering, ‘What the hell is going on?’ Sebastian and I wrote the song together, and lyrically I’m throwing my view of the world and of the last ten years right in your face. Hold on tight and get ready to smile.”

Apart from Peter Tägtgren on vocals and guitar, the band now features his son Sebastian on drums, as well as Jonathan Olsson on bass, and Sebastian Svalland on guitar. Their band’s previous full-length album, I Am, was released in May 2024, so the fresh single could be a hint at working on more music for the next record.

“I Don’t Give A Fukk” is out now, available on all platforms, with the music video scoring almost 100K views in less than two days since its release.
